What it actually does
Incorrect maxtype assignment in rmnet_link_ops causes global out-of-bounds read during nla_parse_nested_deprecated validation of netlink attributes in the Qualcomm rmnet driver.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the affected Qualcomm rmnet networking code risk kernel crashes or limited information disclosure when processing crafted local netlink requests, potentially disrupting network connectivity or requiring reboots on Linux-based devices and servers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access sends a specially crafted RTM_NEWLINK netlink message that triggers nested attribute parsing against the oversized rmnet_policy, reading past the end of the global policy array and potentially leaking kernel memory or causing a crash.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to include commit 093dab655808207f7a9f54cf156240aeafc70590 which replaces the oversized maxtype with IFLA_RMNET_MAX.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of commit 093dab655808207f7a9f54cf156240aeafc70590 in the kernel source tree or confirm the rmnet_policy definition uses IFLA_RMNET_MAX as its maxtype; recompile and boot-test with the fixed kernel.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or process execution on target system
- Construct and send RTM_NEWLINK netlink message with nested attributes exceeding rmnet_policy bounds
- Trigger __rtnl_newlink path that calls nla_parse_nested_deprecated on rmnet attributes
- Observe KASAN global-out-of-bounds read or subsequent kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN reports citing global-out-of-bounds in validate_nla or __nla_validate_parse when rmnet_policy is referenced; inspect audit logs for unusual RTM_NEWLINK netlink activity from untrusted processes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade to the fixed commit on any systems exposing rmnet interfaces
- Monitor for kernel oops or KASAN reports referencing rmnet_policy or validate_nla
- Restrict unprivileged netlink access via SELinux or AppArmor policies where rmnet is enabled
