What it actually does
Out-of-memory conditions in ICU libraries were previously handled by attempting to continue execution, which could be leveraged for memory corruption; the fix forces a crash to prevent exploitation.
Why it matters to the business
Unpatched systems remain exposed to memory corruption attacks that could lead to crashes, data corruption, or remote code execution, increasing operational risk and potential downtime for users of affected software versions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers an out-of-memory condition in the ICU component and exploits the legacy continuation behavior to corrupt memory structures and achieve code execution or denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade xorg-x11-server-devel and xorg-x11-server-source on AlmaLinux 8 to version 1.20.8-6.1.el8_3 or later; apply equivalent updates for Firefox ESR and Thunderbird to 115.9 or newer where applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm package versions match or exceed the fixed releases using the system's package manager and verify the ICU OOM behavior results in a crash rather than continuation.
Typical attack path
- Identify a target running an unpatched version of affected software
- Craft input that induces an out-of-memory state in the ICU library
- Leverage the continuation behavior to perform memory corruption
- Escalate to arbitrary code execution or crash the process
How to detect it
Review application and system logs for unexpected crashes or memory allocation failures around ICU usage; correlate with process termination events in unpatched environments.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching affected packages within standard change windows given low EPSS but memory corruption classification
- Monitor vendor advisories for downstream dependents and apply updates promptly
- Review memory-related crash logs for signs of exploitation attempts post-remediation
The record
To harden ICU against exploitation, the behavior for out-of-memory conditions was changed to crash instead of attempt to continue. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 115.9 and Thunderbird < 115.9.
