What it actually does

Out-of-bounds read in readMSH during processing of ELEMENT_TET elements from a crafted .msh file, enabling limited memory disclosure.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may obtain fragments of process memory from applications that load untrusted 3D mesh files, risking exposure of sensitive data in engineering or visualization workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a .msh file with malformed ELEMENT_TET data, delivers it to a target user or system, and triggers the readMSH function in libigl when the file is opened, causing an out-of-bounds read.

How to fix it

Upgrade libigl to a patched release that corrects the ELEMENT_TET handling in readMSH; until available, avoid loading untrusted .msh files and consider sandboxing mesh-processing applications.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed libigl version is newer than 2.5.0, test file loading with known-good and boundary-case .msh files, and review source or patch notes for readMSH ELEMENT_TET fixes.

Typical attack path

  1. Create a .msh file containing malformed ELEMENT_TET records
  2. Host or send the file to a victim (email, download, shared storage)
  3. Victim opens the file in an application linked against vulnerable libigl
  4. readMSH processes the ELEMENT_TET section and performs the out-of-bounds read

How to detect it

Review application logs for crashes or errors while processing .msh files, inspect file-handling code paths that invoke readMSH, and search for unexpected memory-access patterns during mesh import.

What your security team should do

  • Track upstream libigl releases for a fix addressing CVE-2024-24584
  • Add policy controls that block or quarantine untrusted .msh files
  • Apply application sandboxing or least-privilege execution for mesh loaders
  • Update EPSS monitoring; current score remains low with no observed exploitation

The record

Multiple out-of-bounds read vulnerabilities exist in the readMSH functionality of libigl v2.5.0. A specially crafted .msh file can lead to an out-of-bounds read. An attacker can provide a malicious file to trigger this vulnerability. This vulnerabilitty concerns the`readMSH` function while processing `MshLoader::ELEMENT_TET` elements.
