What it actually does

Reflected cross-site scripting flaw in server error reporting allows untrusted input to be echoed back in responses without sanitization, enabling script execution in victims' browsers.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can hijack user sessions or steal data through malicious links, leading to unauthorized access and potential compliance issues for organizations using the affected software.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a URL containing a script payload that triggers an error condition on the server; when a victim visits the link, the payload is reflected in the error page and executes in their browser context.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a fixed version of hackmdio/codimd (GIT) containing commit da511d0b1661e1f496e700bda35dc2b127dd456e. Implement input sanitization and output encoding on all error reporting paths as an interim control.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review release notes for the applied commit, retest error pages with known XSS test vectors to confirm payloads are no longer reflected, and verify HTTP responses contain appropriate security headers.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify error-reporting endpoint or parameter that reflects input
  2. Craft malicious URL embedding JavaScript payload designed to trigger error path
  3. Deliver link via phishing or other social engineering to authenticated or privileged users
  4. Victim interaction causes script to execute, performing actions such as session theft or content manipulation

How to detect it

Inspect web server access logs for unusual query parameters containing script tags or event handlers that coincide with error response codes; review browser console or proxy logs for unexpected script execution originating from error pages.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the fixed commit immediately given the public disclosure date and persistent exposure window
  • Scan public-facing instances for any custom error templates that may still reflect user input
  • Educate users on recognizing suspicious links while the upgrade is deployed

The record

Orthanc versions before 1.12.2 are affected by a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. The vulnerability was present in the server's error reporting.
