What it actually does

The flaw in the Group Replication GCS component allows a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a partial denial of service against the MySQL Server process.

Why it matters to the business

Brief database service interruptions can halt application workloads and require manual restarts or failovers, increasing operational overhead especially for organizations running older 8.0, 8.4 or 9.0 releases.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker who already possesses high-privileged network credentials connects via any supported protocol and sends specially crafted group-replication traffic that triggers the GCS flaw, resulting in a partial service outage.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected MySQL Server installations to the latest vendor-supplied releases that resolve the issue; apply vendor patches for 8.0, 8.4 and 9.0 branches as soon as they become available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running MySQL version is newer than the listed affected releases and confirm the Group Replication GCS component no longer exhibits the partial DoS behavior under equivalent privileged network access testing.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged network credentials for the MySQL instance
  2. Establish a connection over one of the exposed protocols
  3. Send crafted group-replication GCS messages
  4. Cause partial denial of service on the target server

How to detect it

Inspect database audit and error logs for unexpected group-replication GCS failures or partial service restarts initiated by privileged sessions; correlate with network connection records from high-privileged accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all internet-facing or high-value MySQL instances within the next maintenance window
  • Review and reduce unnecessary high-privileged network accounts
  • Enable enhanced logging for group replication events to aid future detection

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: Group Replication GCS). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.39 and prior, 8.4.2 and prior and 9.0.1 and prior. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 2.2 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).
