What it actually does

The flaw in the client programs component permits a low-privileged network attacker to trigger a partial denial of service against the MySQL Server process via crafted interactions over multiple protocols.

Why it matters to the business

Brief interruptions to database availability can slow or halt dependent applications and services, increasing operational overhead until the affected instances are recovered.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker first obtains low-privileged network access, then crafts and sends protocol-specific requests that exploit the client-side handling weakness, resulting in partial service degradation without requiring elevated rights or user interaction.

How to fix it

Upgrade the affected Maven artifact com.openshift.jenkins:openshift-pipeline to version 1.0.57 or later and apply the corresponding Oracle MySQL patches that resolve the client programs issue in versions 8.0.40, 8.4.3, and 9.0.2.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version strings of both the MySQL binaries and the openshift-pipeline component match or exceed the listed fixed releases, then re-test connectivity and availability under load.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain network reachability to the MySQL server instance
  2. Authenticate using a low-privileged account
  3. Transmit specially formed packets across supported protocols
  4. Induce partial denial of service on the target server

How to detect it

Review MySQL error and connection logs for repeated partial service failures originating from authenticated low-privilege sessions; correlate with network flow records showing unusual protocol patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 1.0.57 pipeline update and MySQL patches immediately due to the long window since disclosure
  • Restrict network access to MySQL ports to only trusted clients
  • Enable enhanced logging on client connections for anomaly review

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Client programs). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.39 and prior, 8.4.2 and prior and 9.0.1 and prior. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a partial denial of service (partial DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.1 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L).
