What it actually does

The flaw in the Compiler component permits an unauthenticated network attacker to achieve limited unauthorized modification of accessible data by abusing APIs that supply input to the affected compiler logic.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations running the listed Java or GraalVM versions face a low-probability risk of data tampering that could silently alter records or configurations; the large number of downstream dependents on the affected library increases the scope of potential exposure across enterprise Java ecosystems, though exploitation remains difficult.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with network reachability crafts API calls or supplies data to the Compiler component in a way that bypasses intended authorization checks, resulting in limited integrity violations; the attack requires precise conditions and does not grant broad access or remote code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade org.jboss:jboss-ejb-client to version 4.0.39 or later; apply the corresponding Oracle Java SE, GraalVM for JDK, and GraalVM Enterprise Edition patches for the affected releases (23, 17.0.12, 21.0.4, 20.3.15, 21.3.11) as soon as possible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running Java/GraalVM and jboss-ejb-client versions match or exceed the fixed releases; test that API-driven compiler operations no longer permit unauthorized data changes; review application dependency manifests for the updated library.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify reachable Java SE, GraalVM, or dependent application endpoints exposing the Compiler APIs
  2. Craft and send specially formed network requests or data payloads through supported protocols
  3. Trigger the vulnerable compiler path to perform unauthorized data modifications
  4. Verify limited integrity changes without triggering higher-severity alerts

How to detect it

Review application and web-service logs for unusual compiler API invocations or data modification patterns originating from untrusted sources; correlate with network access attempts to Java endpoints that supply data to the compiler component.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of internet-facing or multi-tenant Java deployments within the next maintenance window
  • Update build and dependency manifests to enforce org.jboss:jboss-ejb-client 4.0.39+ across all services
  • Scan internal artifact repositories and CI pipelines for older vulnerable versions
  • Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity indicators for any upward trend

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition product of Oracle Java SE (component: Compiler). Supported versions that are affected are Oracle Java SE: 23; Oracle GraalVM for JDK: 17.0.12, 21.0.4, 23; Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition: 20.3.15 and 21.3.11. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized update, insert or delete access to some of Oracle Java SE, Oracle GraalVM for JDK, Oracle GraalVM Enterprise Edition accessible data. Note: This vulnerability can be exploited by using APIs in the specified Component, e.g., through a web service which supplies data to the APIs. This vulnerability also applies to Java deployments, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, that load and run untrusted code (e.g., code that comes from the internet) and rely on the Java sandbox for security. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 3.7 (Integrity impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N).
