What it actually does

The flaw in the Server: DDL component permits a high-privileged network attacker to trigger a hang or repeatable crash resulting in complete denial of service to the database server.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation produces extended database outages and service unavailability; the 531 downstream dependents increase the scope of potential disruption across dependent applications and organizations.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with valid high-privileged credentials connects over a supported protocol and issues specially crafted DDL statements that trigger the vulnerability in the DDL handling code path, causing the server process to hang or terminate.

How to fix it

Upgrade all affected PostgreSQL JDBC driver installations to one of the fixed versions: 42.2.28, 42.3.9 or later; apply the corresponding Oracle MySQL patch for versions 8.0.39+, 8.4.2+ or 9.0.1+ as applicable.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running database and driver versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases; retest DDL operations under load to verify stability; monitor for absence of previously observed crash signatures.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain high-privileged database credentials
  2. Establish network connection to the MySQL server using a supported protocol
  3. Submit malicious DDL statements targeting the vulnerable component
  4. Induce repeated server crashes or hangs to achieve denial of service

How to detect it

Review database server logs for repeated crash or hang events correlated with DDL activity from privileged accounts; examine process termination records and connection logs around the time of service unavailability.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of internet-facing or high-value database instances within the next maintenance window
  • Review and restrict unnecessary high-privileged network accounts
  • Implement connection throttling and resource limits to reduce DoS blast radius
  • Update dependency manifests to enforce the fixed PostgreSQL driver versions across all 531 dependent projects

The record

Vulnerability in the MySQL Server product of Oracle MySQL (component: Server: DDL). Supported versions that are affected are 8.0.39 and prior, 8.4.2 and prior and 9.0.1 and prior. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise MySQL Server. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of MySQL Server. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 4.9 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H).
