What it actually does
Local high-privileged attacker can exploit a flaw in the VirtualBox Core component to achieve full takeover of the VirtualBox process, resulting in a scope change that allows compromise of additional products on the host.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker already present on the virtualization host with administrative rights can seize control of the entire VirtualBox environment, exposing guest VMs, host resources, and any connected infrastructure to data theft, tampering, or disruption.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with high-privileged local access on the host where VirtualBox runs leverages the core vulnerability to escalate privileges within the VirtualBox process itself, achieving full takeover and extending impact beyond the hypervisor due to the scope change.
How to fix it
Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.20 or later on all affected hosts. Verify the installed version after upgrade and restart any running virtual machines.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the VirtualBox version is 7.0.20 or newer via the application UI or command-line tools; re-test that high-privileged local operations no longer result in process takeover or scope expansion.
Typical attack path
- Obtain high-privileged local logon on the host running Oracle VM VirtualBox
- Trigger the flaw in the Core component from the host context
- Escalate to full control of the VirtualBox process
- Leverage scope change to impact additional products and resources on the host
How to detect it
Review host system logs and VirtualBox process audit trails for unexpected privilege transitions or abnormal interactions with the Core component; correlate with any post-exploitation activity on guest VMs or the host.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory all hosts running VirtualBox and schedule upgrades to 7.0.20+
- Restrict local administrative access to virtualization hosts to the minimum necessary personnel
- Monitor host logs for anomalous VirtualBox process behavior until patches are applied
The record
Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.20. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows high privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.2 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).
