What it actually does

Allows a low-privileged local attacker with logon access to the host running VirtualBox to read critical or all data accessible to the VirtualBox process, crossing security boundaries due to a scope change.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers who already have limited access to a virtualization host can steal sensitive virtual machine data or configuration, increasing risk of data exposure in environments using this product.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with a low-privileged account on the host logs in locally, triggers the flaw in the VirtualBox core component, and reads data that should be protected, potentially affecting other products running on the same system.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.16 or later on all affected systems.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed VirtualBox version is 7.0.16 or newer; confirm no unpatched instances remain via inventory scans or package managers.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain low-privileged local logon to the host system running VirtualBox
  2. Execute code or commands that interact with the vulnerable VirtualBox core component
  3. Read unauthorized critical data or full VirtualBox-accessible data sets
  4. Leverage obtained data for further attacks due to scope change

How to detect it

Examine host logs for unusual local access or process interactions with VirtualBox core components around the time of suspected activity; no public exploitation artifacts are known.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all VirtualBox installations to 7.0.16 or later within standard patching cycles
  • Review host access controls to limit local logons to VirtualBox hosts
  • Monitor for any new exploitation details or updates to EPSS score

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.16. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.5 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N).
