What it actually does

Allows a low-privileged local user on a Linux host to escalate privileges within the VirtualBox process and achieve full control over the hypervisor instance.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation on Linux hosts running affected VirtualBox versions can lead to compromise of hosted virtual machines, loss of isolation between guests and host, and potential lateral movement within virtualization infrastructure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with existing low-privileged local access on a Linux system running VirtualBox crafts input that triggers the flaw in the core component, resulting in arbitrary code execution that takes over the VirtualBox process and its associated virtual machines.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.16 or later on all Linux hosts. Verify the installed version after upgrade and restart any running virtual machines.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the VirtualBox version is 7.0.16 or newer using the command-line tool or GUI about dialog on each Linux host. Re-test privilege boundaries between host users and the VirtualBox process.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain low-privileged local logon to the Linux host running VirtualBox
  2. Execute malicious code or input targeting the VirtualBox core component
  3. Escalate privileges to achieve full control of the VirtualBox instance and any running guests

How to detect it

Review authentication and process execution logs on Linux hosts for unexpected VirtualBox-related activity initiated by non-administrative users; examine core dumps or crash reports involving the VirtualBox executable for signs of exploitation attempts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all Linux systems running VirtualBox and schedule upgrades to 7.0.16+
  • Restrict local logon access to hosts running VirtualBox to the minimum required users
  • Monitor for post-patch anomalies in VirtualBox process behavior

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.16. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. Note: This vulnerability applies to Linux hosts only. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 7.8 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
