What it actually does

Local privilege escalation in Oracle VM VirtualBox core component allowing a low-privileged authenticated user to take over the VirtualBox process with scope change to additional products.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers with limited host access can fully compromise virtual machine management, resulting in data exposure, service disruption, and potential lateral movement across multiple systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with logon access to the host executes code that abuses the core flaw to escalate privileges and seize control of the VirtualBox hypervisor.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.16 or later on all affected hosts.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed version is 7.0.16 or higher via product inventory or command-line version checks; review Oracle security advisory for patch verification steps.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain low-privileged local access to a host running VirtualBox
  2. Execute code that targets the vulnerable core component
  3. Escalate to full control of the VirtualBox process
  4. Leverage scope change to impact additional products

How to detect it

Review host system logs and process creation events for anomalous VirtualBox activity or unexpected privilege changes around the time of suspected access.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade all VirtualBox installations to 7.0.16 or newer
  • Restrict local logon access on hosts running VirtualBox
  • Monitor host systems for unexpected VirtualBox process behavior

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.16. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in takeover of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 8.8 (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H).
