What it actually does

The flaw in the VirtualBox core component permits an unauthenticated remote attacker to access critical or all accessible data via crafted HTTP requests over the network due to insufficient access controls.

Why it matters to the business

Exposure of sensitive virtualization data and configurations could result in loss of confidentiality for virtual machine environments and hosted workloads.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker identifies an exposed VirtualBox HTTP endpoint, sends specially crafted requests that exploit the core flaw, and retrieves unauthorized sensitive data without authentication.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.16 or later.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed version is at least 7.0.16, review configuration for restricted network exposure, and test that unauthorized HTTP requests no longer return sensitive data.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate network-accessible VirtualBox HTTP interface
  2. Send crafted HTTP requests to trigger the core vulnerability
  3. Extract critical or all accessible data from responses

How to detect it

Examine HTTP access logs for the VirtualBox service looking for unusual request patterns or sequences that attempt to bypass authentication and retrieve data.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the 7.0.16 update without delay
  • Restrict network access to VirtualBox management interfaces
  • Implement monitoring for anomalous HTTP traffic targeting VirtualBox

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.16. Difficult to exploit vulnerability allows unauthenticated attacker with network access via HTTP to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized access to critical data or complete access to all Oracle VM VirtualBox accessible data. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 5.9 (Confidentiality impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
