What it actually does

Local low-privileged process on the host can trigger an unhandled condition in the VirtualBox Core component that forces the entire hypervisor process to hang or terminate, producing a complete denial of service with scope change to other products running on the same host.

Why it matters to the business

Virtual machines on the affected host become unavailable until the hypervisor is restarted, interrupting workloads, backups, and any services that depend on those VMs; the long publication window increases the window of exposure for organizations still running older releases.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with a low-privileged account on the host operating system crafts or invokes a sequence of local operations against the VirtualBox Core component; because the vulnerability is easily triggered, the action immediately causes the hypervisor to stop responding or crash, denying service to all guests without needing elevated privileges or network access.

How to fix it

Upgrade Oracle VM VirtualBox to version 7.0.16 or later on every affected host; verify the installed version after the update and restart any running virtual machines.

How to confirm the fix worked

Run the VirtualBox command-line tool or inspect the product version string to confirm 7.0.16 or newer is present; attempt to start a test VM and monitor for stability under normal local-user activity.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain low-privileged local access on a host running an affected VirtualBox release
  2. Execute or trigger the vulnerable code path in the Core component
  3. Cause the VirtualBox process to enter a hung or crashed state
  4. Observe denial of service for all running virtual machines

How to detect it

Review host operating-system logs and VirtualBox process crash dumps around the time of reported VM outages; look for unexpected termination or hang of the VirtualBox executable initiated by non-administrative local sessions.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of all VirtualBox installations to 7.0.16 or later within the next maintenance window
  • Inventory hosts running VirtualBox and confirm no unsupported versions remain in production
  • Restrict local logons on virtualization hosts to the minimum required accounts
  • Monitor vendor advisories for any follow-on fixes in the 7.0.x branch

The record

Vulnerability in the Oracle VM VirtualBox product of Oracle Virtualization (component: Core). Supported versions that are affected are Prior to 7.0.16. Easily exploitable vulnerability allows low privileged attacker with logon to the infrastructure where Oracle VM VirtualBox executes to compromise Oracle VM VirtualBox. While the vulnerability is in Oracle VM VirtualBox, attacks may significantly impact additional products (scope change). Successful attacks of this vulnerability can result in unauthorized ability to cause a hang or frequently repeatable crash (complete DOS) of Oracle VM VirtualBox. CVSS 3.1 Base Score 6.5 (Availability impacts). CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H).
