What it actually does
Remote unauthenticated attacker can supply HTTP request parameters that are passed directly as command-line arguments to the kinit process on the FreeIPA server, resulting in denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Authentication and identity services can be disrupted, preventing users from obtaining Kerberos tickets and causing operational downtime for dependent applications.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends a crafted HTTP request containing parameters that the FreeIPA server interprets as arguments to kinit; this triggers abnormal behavior or crashes in the kinit process without requiring authentication or user interaction.
How to fix it
Apply the vendor-supplied patch that enforces proper input validation and sanitization before invoking kinit; restrict network access to FreeIPA management endpoints until patches are deployed.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of input validation code that rejects or sanitizes unexpected parameters before calling kinit; re-test the affected endpoints with previously successful malicious payloads to verify they no longer cause service disruption.
Typical attack path
- Identify a reachable FreeIPA server endpoint that accepts HTTP requests
- Craft a request containing parameters that map to kinit command-line arguments
- Transmit the request over the network
- Observe denial-of-service condition on the kinit process or related service
How to detect it
Review web server and FreeIPA application logs for HTTP requests containing unusual parameters that could be interpreted as kinit arguments; look for sudden kinit process terminations or authentication service restarts without administrative action.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching FreeIPA instances given the remote unauthenticated attack vector
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any future increase in exploitation likelihood
- Implement network segmentation to limit exposure of identity services
- Review logs for anomalous kinit invocations or process crashes
The record
A flaw was found in FreeIPA. This issue may allow a remote attacker to craft a HTTP request with parameters that can be interpreted as command arguments to kinit on the FreeIPA server, which can lead to a denial of service.
