What it actually does
Inadequate access control allows a user with student role to create arbitrary calendar events targeted at higher-privileged roles and to add events to every user's calendar without consent.
Why it matters to the business
Disruption to teaching schedules, confusion among staff and students, and potential misuse for social engineering or operational interference across the learning platform.
How an attack unfolds
An authenticated student identifies the calendar event creation endpoint, crafts requests that bypass role checks, and injects events visible to teachers, administrators, or all users.
How to fix it
Apply the Moodle security update that enforces proper role checks on calendar event creation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the patched Moodle version is deployed, then test that student accounts can no longer create events for other roles or global calendars.
Typical attack path
- Authenticate with student-level credentials
- Locate the vulnerable calendar event creation API or form
- Craft and submit requests that specify arbitrary recipients or global visibility
- Verify events appear on higher-privilege or all-user calendars
How to detect it
Search authentication and application logs for calendar event creation actions performed by accounts with student roles; correlate with unusual recipient lists or global visibility flags.
What your security team should do
- Upgrade Moodle to the fixed release immediately
- Review calendar event creation logs for anomalous entries created by student accounts
- Temporarily restrict calendar features for student roles if patching is delayed
The record
Inadequate access control in Moodle LMS. This vulnerability could allow a local user with a student role to create arbitrary events intended for users with higher roles. It could also allow the attacker to add events to the calendar of all users without their prior consent.
