Monitor only SSVC: Track

Some older programs that let users supply web addresses could be tricked into connecting to the wrong computer, potentially exposing internal information.

What it actually does

Crafted credentials in shorthand URLs passed to Wget allow SSRF, causing Wget to connect to an arbitrary host instead of the intended target.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may reach internal systems or exfiltrate data through applications that embed user-controlled URLs into Wget calls, increasing exposure on legacy systems still using the affected packages.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a malicious shorthand URL containing specially formatted credentials to an application that invokes Wget; Wget interprets the credentials as a directive to connect to an attacker-chosen host, bypassing intended network boundaries.

How to fix it

Upgrade chromium-browser to 47.0.2526.73-0ubuntu0.14.04.1.1106 and oxide-qt to 1.11.3-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS systems; replace Wget usage with safer URL handling libraries or disable credential embedding in URLs.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases using dpkg or apt; test that applications no longer allow arbitrary host redirection via crafted credential URLs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify an application that accepts user input and passes it to Wget using shorthand URL syntax with embedded credentials.
  2. Craft a URL containing malicious credentials that redirect the connection to an arbitrary internal or external host.
  3. Submit the URL through the application interface.
  4. Wget follows the crafted credentials and establishes a connection to the attacker-specified host.
  5. Attacker interacts with the reached host to probe, access, or exfiltrate resources.

How to detect it

Review application logs for Wget invocations containing unusual credential syntax or unexpected host connections; inspect network flows originating from hosts running the vulnerable packages for connections to non-intended destinations.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade or replace the listed packages on any remaining Ubuntu 14.04 systems.
  • Audit codebases for Wget calls that accept user-supplied URLs and refactor to use safe URL parsing.
  • Apply network segmentation and egress filtering to limit SSRF impact until patches are deployed.
  • Monitor for new CVEs affecting Wget or similar tools and prioritize updates on EOL distributions.

The record

Applications that use Wget to access a remote resource using shorthand URLs and pass arbitrary user credentials in the URL are vulnerable. In these cases attackers can enter crafted credentials which will cause Wget to access an arbitrary host.
