What it actually does
A remote attacker can trigger a segmentation fault and perform an out-of-bounds memory read by sending a malformed network packet of the correct length, leading to application crash or potential information disclosure.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could crash the browser remotely or read unintended memory contents, potentially disrupting user sessions or exposing sensitive data in affected systems running outdated software.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malformed packet matching the expected length and sends it to a vulnerable Chromium instance, causing the application to segfault or read beyond allocated memory bounds.
How to fix it
Upgrade chromium-browser to version 37.0.2062.94-0ubuntu0.14.04.1~pkg1042 or later; note that Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is end-of-life and should be migrated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed chromium-browser version meets or exceeds 37.0.2062.94-0ubuntu0.14.04.1~pkg1042; test packet handling with controlled malformed inputs if feasible.
Typical attack path
- Identify vulnerable Chromium version
- Craft malformed packet with correct length
- Send packet over network to target
- Trigger crash or observe out-of-bounds read effects
How to detect it
Monitor application crash logs and network traffic for anomalous packet patterns that precede failures; no widespread exploitation indicators reported.
What your security team should do
- Apply the specified fixed version immediately
- Migrate away from unsupported Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
- Review network exposure of browser processes
The record
Remotely executed SEGV and out of bounds read allows malicious packet sender to crash or cause an out of bounds read via sending a malformed packet with the correct length.
