What it actually does
Out-of-bounds memory access in the io_uring submission and completion queue rings allows a local process to trigger kernel memory corruption resulting in a system crash.
Why it matters to the business
Local users can cause denial-of-service outages on Linux systems by crashing the kernel; the long-standing nature of the flaw increases exposure across many deployments even though exploitability remains low.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access prepares specially crafted io_uring submission and completion queue rings that exceed expected bounds; when the kernel processes these rings an out-of-bounds access occurs leading to an immediate kernel panic and system reboot.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for the io_uring SQ/CQ ring bounds check; apply vendor or distribution patches as soon as available and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version is newer than the vulnerable release; exercise io_uring workloads in a test environment and confirm absence of out-of-bounds faults in kernel logs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or process execution on the target Linux host
- Map or allocate io_uring rings with malicious offsets or sizes
- Submit the malformed rings to the kernel via the io_uring interface
- Trigger kernel processing that dereferences out-of-bounds memory
- Cause kernel panic and system crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and crash dumps for io_uring ring processing faults or out-of-bounds memory references; correlate with process activity that uses the io_uring system calls.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all internet-facing and multi-tenant Linux systems
- Restrict untrusted local accounts from using io_uring via seccomp or kernel configuration where feasible
- Monitor kernel crash logs for io_uring-related panics until patches are deployed
The record
An out-of-bounds memory access flaw was found in the io_uring SQ/CQ rings functionality in the Linux kernel. This issue could allow a local user to crash the system.
