What it actually does

Out-of-bounds read in the canvas element implementation triggered by specific graphics driver and settings combinations, allowing memory contents to be read and rendered into canvas images.

Attackers may obtain sensitive data such as credentials or session tokens from browser process memory, increasing risk of account compromise or data leakage for users of affected browsers.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a malicious page that uses crafted canvas operations and graphics settings to trigger the out-of-bounds read; when a victim visits the page the browser leaks memory into the canvas which the attacker then exfiltrates.

How to fix it

Upgrade Firefox to version 120 or later, Firefox ESR to 115.5.0 or later, and Thunderbird to 115.5 or later; apply vendor updates as soon as available for Debian packages.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed browser versions meet or exceed the fixed releases; test canvas rendering behavior under affected graphics configurations to confirm absence of memory leakage.

1. Host malicious webpage containing crafted canvas rendering code
2. Victim visits page with vulnerable browser version and compatible graphics configuration
3. Page forces out-of-bounds memory read into canvas image
4. Attacker retrieves canvas contents via JavaScript and exfiltrates data

Review web proxy and browser telemetry logs for visits to unexpected domains combined with canvas data extraction patterns; inspect for memory disclosure artifacts in browser crash reports or process dumps.
