What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs in the browser engine that can result in memory corruption, potentially allowing arbitrary code execution within the browser process.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could compromise user browsers to steal sensitive data, install malware, or pivot to other systems, leading to data breaches and operational disruption. High ecosystem prevalence for web browsers increases widespread risk.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts malicious web content that triggers the memory corruption bugs when rendered in an affected Firefox version, leading to code execution in the context of the browser.
How to fix it
Upgrade to Firefox version 119 or later as soon as possible.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed browser version is 119 or higher through the about:support page or equivalent; confirm update mechanisms are functioning and check official release notes for the fix.
Typical attack path
- Attacker hosts or compromises a webpage with malicious content
- Victim visits the page using an affected browser version
- Exploit payload triggers memory corruption during rendering
- Arbitrary code is executed within the browser process
How to detect it
Review browser crash reports and process logs for anomalous memory access patterns; monitor for unexpected outbound connections or file writes initiated from browser processes after web page visits.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy Firefox 119 or later across all endpoints
- Enable automatic updates to reduce future exposure windows
- Review and restrict browser extensions that could increase attack surface
The record
Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 118. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 119.
