What it actually does

Null pointer dereference in MIPS firmware environment parsing when the first env entry is absent, triggered by firmware passing an empty list to fw_getenv before strchr is called.

Why it matters to the business

Potential kernel crashes or denial of service on MIPS-based systems during boot or firmware interaction; low exploit likelihood and no observed attacks reduce immediate operational risk, though unpatched systems remain exposed until updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker would need to control or influence the firmware environment passed to the kernel on MIPS hardware such that an empty env list is provided, causing the dereference during early boot environment processing; no public exploits or threat actor campaigns are known.

How to fix it

Update to Linux kernel versions containing commit f334b31625683418aaa2a335470eec950a95a254 or later stable releases; for affected packages upgrade tiff (Echo) to 4.7.0 or equivalent patched builds.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify kernel source includes the check for first env entry existence before strchr; confirm running kernel version matches or exceeds the fixed commit or package version 4.7.0.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain ability to supply or modify firmware-provided environment data on a MIPS system
  2. Trigger kernel initialization that calls fw_getenv on an empty list
  3. Induce null pointer dereference leading to panic or undefined behavior

How to detect it

Examine kernel boot logs and dmesg for null pointer dereference oops messages during firmware environment initialization; no specific post-exploitation artifacts are known due to lack of observed campaigns.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching MIPS Linux systems to the fixed commit or 4.7.0 within normal change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
  • Review firmware environment handling in boot processes for MIPS devices
  • Monitor for any future EPSS increases or exploit maturity changes

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: MIPS: fw: Allow firmware to pass a empty env fw_getenv will use env entry to determine style of env, however it is legal for firmware to just pass a empty list. Check if first entry exist before running strchr to avoid null pointer dereference.
