What it actually does
The udlfb driver performed an incomplete endpoint validation that only confirmed existence of a bulk-OUT endpoint without verifying it matched the endpoint the driver would actually submit URBs to, allowing a mismatch that triggers a BOGUS urb xfer warning and potential submission failure.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using USB-attached display adapters may experience driver warnings, failed video mode changes, or loss of display functionality when certain non-conforming devices are connected, increasing support burden and reducing reliability for affected hardware.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a malicious or non-standard USB device that presents endpoint descriptors failing the driver's implicit assumptions; during probe and set-par operations the driver submits a URB to an endpoint whose transfer type does not match the pipe type, causing the USB core to emit the warning and reject the transfer.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 1522dc58bff87af79461b96d90ec122e9e726004 or later stable releases (5.4.244 and corresponding backports) that replace the existence-only check with an explicit verification that the endpoint the driver will use is a bulk-OUT endpoint.
How to confirm the fix worked
After patching, confirm the udlfb source contains the revised endpoint lookup logic; retest with previously triggering USB devices to ensure no BOGUS urb xfer warnings occur during probe and mode-set operations.
Typical attack path
- Attacker connects a crafted USB device exposing mismatched endpoint types
- Kernel loads udlfb driver and calls dlfb_usb_probe
- Driver locates first bulk-OUT endpoint without type verification
- dlfb_set_video_mode or dlfb_ops_set_par submits URB via dlfb_submit_urb
- usb_submit_urb detects pipe/type mismatch and logs warning or fails
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for the strings 'BOGUS urb xfer' and 'pipe .* != type' originating from usb_submit_urb when udlfb is active; correlate with USB device connection events in syslog or udev logs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems that expose udlfb (USB display link adapters)
- Apply the referenced stable commits or distro backports within normal patch windows
- Monitor dmesg for usb_submit_urb BOGUS warnings as a temporary detection signal
- Disable udlfb module if USB display hardware is not required
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: udlfb: Fix endpoint check The syzbot fuzzer detected a problem in the udlfb driver, caused by an endpoint not having the expected type: usb 1-1: Read EDID byte 0 failed: -71 usb 1-1: Unable to get valid EDID from device/display ------------[ cut here ]------------ usb 1-1: BOGUS urb xfer, pipe 3 != type 1 WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 9 at drivers/usb/core/urb.c:504 usb_submit_urb+0xed6/0x1880 drivers/usb/core/urb.c:504 Modules linked in: CPU: 0 PID: 9 Comm: kworker/0:1 Not tainted 6.4.0-rc1-syzkaller-00016-ga4422ff22142 #0 Hardware name: Google Google Compute Engine/Google Compute Engine, BIOS Google 04/28/2023 Workqueue: usb_hub_wq hub_event RIP: 0010:usb_submit_urb+0xed6/0x1880 drivers/usb/core/urb.c:504 ... We can fix the problem by instead checking that the endpoint used by the driver does exist and is bulk-OUT.
