What it actually does
Use-after-free in the Linux kernel worker thread caused by do_submit_urb in the siano USB media driver, where memory freed during device probe/term is later accessed.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability, crashes, or potential privilege escalation on systems attaching compatible USB tuner devices, increasing downtime and security exposure for affected Linux deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with physical or local access attaches a USB device matching the siano driver, triggering smsusb_probe and subsequent smsusb_term_device which frees structures; the lingering URB submission then causes the worker thread to dereference the freed memory.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c379272ea9c2ee36f0a1327b0fb8889c975093f7 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit c379272ea9c2ee36f0a1327b0fb8889c975093f7; attempt to reproduce the original KASAN report with a siano-compatible device; confirm absence of use-after-free in worker_thread.
Typical attack path
- Attacker connects a compatible USB media device to a vulnerable Linux system
- Kernel loads the siano driver and calls smsusb_probe
- Probe path allocates structures and submits URBs via do_submit_urb
- Error or termination path in smsusb_term_device frees the structures
- Worker thread later accesses the freed memory leading to UAF
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for KASAN use-after-free reports referencing worker_thread and smsusb; inspect dmesg or syslog for allocation/free traces involving smsusb_probe and smsusb_term_device.
- BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in worker_thread
- smsusb_probe
- smsusb_term_device
- do_submit_urb
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel patch containing c379272ea9c2ee36f0a1327b0fb8889c975093f7 immediately on all affected systems
- Restrict physical USB access until patches are deployed
- Monitor for kernel oops or KASAN reports involving worker_thread and siano
- Update device allow-lists to limit exposure to untrusted USB hardware
