What it actually does

Use-after-free during ib_cq_pool_cleanup triggered on DEVICE_REMOVAL paths for isert connections on OPA hardware after the revert of the incorrect-release fix.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel warnings, potential crashes, or instability on Linux systems using RDMA/InfiniBand or Omni-Path hardware during driver unload or device removal; high ecosystem prevalence in data-center and HPC deployments increases operational risk until patched.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger PCI device removal or module unload on affected OPA hardware can force the isert connection release path, leading to use-after-free in the CQ pool cleanup routine.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a fixed kernel version: 4.14.326 or later stable trees containing commit 77e90bd53019d4d4c9e25552b5efb06dfd8c3c82; rebuild and reboot after applying the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify running kernel version is at or above the listed fixed releases; confirm absence of the ib_cq_pool_cleanup warning during module unload or device removal tests; inspect git log for the referenced commit in the kernel tree.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain local access or control over a process that can initiate driver detach or PCI removal
  2. Trigger hfi1 or rdma device removal/unregistration
  3. Force ib_unregister_device and subsequent cq_pool_cleanup to execute on freed structures
  4. Observe or exploit the resulting use-after-free for denial-of-service or code execution

How to detect it

Monitor kernel logs for WARNING messages referencing ib_cq_pool_cleanup and ib_core during modprobe, pci_remove, or hfi1 unload; inspect dmesg and syslog for call traces involving disable_device and rvt_unregister_device.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching kernel packages on all systems exposing RDMA/InfiniBand or hfi1 drivers
  • Schedule immediate upgrades for production hosts using OPA or isert before the next maintenance window
  • Add kernel version checks to vulnerability scanning and asset inventory processes
  • Test device removal and driver unload paths in staging environments after patching
