What it actually does
Use-after-free condition in Linux kernel L2CAP Bluetooth channel handling where alloc_skb can drop and reacquire the channel lock, allowing the channel to be disconnected and freed while still referenced.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using Bluetooth may experience kernel crashes, memory corruption, or potential remote code execution, leading to service disruption and requiring urgent patching on affected kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker establishes L2CAP channels and triggers timing conditions during skb buffer allocation that release the channel lock, allowing concurrent disconnection and reuse of freed memory structures.
How to fix it
Update Linux kernel to the fixed commit b2fde8cb2a25125111f2144604e0e7c0ebcc4bba or later stable releases containing the L2CAP fix; apply vendor-provided kernel updates immediately.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source or package version includes commit b2fde8cb2a25125111f2144604e0e7c0ebcc4bba; test Bluetooth L2CAP functionality under load to confirm no use-after-free conditions remain.
Typical attack path
- Connect to target Bluetooth stack and establish L2CAP channel
- Perform operations that invoke alloc_skb while holding channel lock
- Trigger channel disconnection during the window where lock is released
- Reuse freed channel structure to cause memory corruption or crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for L2CAP channel errors, use-after-free warnings, or Bluetooth stack crashes around the time of suspicious connection attempts; no public exploitation artifacts are known.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Bluetooth-enabled Linux systems due to potential memory safety impact
- Monitor for new kernel releases and apply within standard change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
- Review Bluetooth usage policies and disable where unnecessary to reduce attack surface
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: L2CAP: Fix potential user-after-free This fixes all instances of which requires to allocate a buffer calling alloc_skb which may release the chan lock and reacquire later which makes it possible that the chan is disconnected in the meantime.
