What it actually does
Use-after-free in flow_block_cb_setup_simple triggered when tcf_block_bind error handler frees cb_list entries that remain referenced in the driver list after ndo_setup_tc succeeds.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory corruption on Linux systems performing traffic control configuration can lead to crashes, denial of service, or local privilege escalation affecting network appliances, servers, and containers using advanced qdisc setups.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with CAP_NET_ADMIN privileges issues tc commands that invoke tcf_block_get_ext and tcf_block_offload_cmd; an error path in tcf_block_bind leaves dangling flow_block_cb pointers in the driver list, which are later dereferenced during flow_block_cb_setup_simple causing the use-after-free.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit cc5fe387c6294d0471cb7ed064efac97fac65ccc which removes flow_block_cb instances from the driver_list before deallocation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains cc5fe387c6294d0471cb7ed064efac97fac65ccc and test that tc qdisc operations no longer produce KASAN use-after-free reports in flow_block_cb_setup_simple.
Typical attack path
- Obtain CAP_NET_ADMIN or root on target Linux system
- Invoke tc qdisc add or replace with ingress or clsact qdisc that triggers tcf_block_bind
- Force error condition in block binding to exercise the faulty free path
- Trigger subsequent use of the freed flow_block_cb via offload or setup operations
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports citing flow_block_cb_setup_simple during tc_modify_qdisc or ingress_init paths; correlate with recent tc netlink messages from untrusted processes.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in flow_block_cb_setup_simple
- Read of size 8 at addr .* by task tc
- flow_block_cb_setup_simple+0x631/0x7c0
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on systems exposing tc configuration to untrusted users or containers
- Restrict CAP_NET_ADMIN via SELinux, AppArmor, or user namespaces where feasible
- Monitor for kernel panics or KASAN reports referencing flow_block_cb_setup_simple
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net/sched: cls_api: remove block_cb from driver_list before freeing Error handler of tcf_block_bind() frees the whole bo->cb_list on error. However, by that time the flow_block_cb instances are already in the driver list because driver ndo_setup_tc() callback is called before that up the call chain in tcf_block_offload_cmd(). This leaves dangling pointers to freed objects in the list and causes use-after-free[0]. Fix it by also removing flow_block_cb instances from driver_list before deallocating them.
