What it actually does
The BPF verifier incorrectly rejected valid pointer comparisons between packet data pointers even when they do not constitute a pointer leak, blocking programs that only hold cap_net_admin and cap_bpf instead of cap_sys_admin.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running containerized or capability-restricted networking workloads on affected kernels experience sudden failure of custom BPF classifiers and filters, disrupting traffic steering, observability, and security policies until kernels are updated.
How an attack unfolds
An administrator or container runtime loads a BPF program containing a bounds check that subtracts packet pointers; the verifier emits "R3 pointer comparison prohibited" and rejects the program. No remote attacker path exists because the issue is a verification policy error rather than a leak or memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c96c67991aac6401b4c6996093bccb704bb2ea4b or later. Bitnami GitLab users should deploy version 18.1.6 or newer. Rebuild and reload any affected BPF programs after the kernel update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit c96c67991aac6401b4c6996093bccb704bb2ea4b; attempt to load the provided reproducer program under cap_net_admin+cap_bpf and verify it no longer produces the pointer comparison error.
Typical attack path
- Load a cls-ingress or similar BPF program that performs (iph + 1) > skb->data_end style comparisons
- Verifier rejects the program under reduced capabilities
- Networking policy or filter fails to attach, leaving traffic handling unchanged or falling back to less secure paths
How to detect it
Review system logs for BPF verifier rejection messages containing "pointer comparison prohibited" around the time of program load attempts; correlate with capability-dropped container or service startup events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on hosts that run custom BPF networking programs with reduced capabilities
- Audit any existing BPF programs for pointer comparisons that may have been silently rejected
- Test BPF program loading in a staging environment before production rollout
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: Fix issue in verifying allow_ptr_leaks After we converted the capabilities of our networking-bpf program from cap_sys_admin to cap_net_admin+cap_bpf, our networking-bpf program failed to start. Because it failed the bpf verifier, and the error log is "R3 pointer comparison prohibited". A simple reproducer as follows, SEC("cls-ingress") int ingress(struct __sk_buff *skb) { struct iphdr *iph = (void *)(long)skb->data + sizeof(struct ethhdr); if ((long)(iph + 1) > (long)skb->data_end) return TC_ACT_STOLEN; return TC_ACT_OK; } Per discussion with Yonghong and Alexei [1], comparison of two packet pointers is not a pointer leak. This patch fixes it. Our local kernel is 6.1.y and we expect this fix to be backported to 6.1.y, so stable is CCed.
