What it actually does
The flaw permits out-of-bounds array indexing in the qla2xxx SCSI driver when formatting the host_str buffer because sprintf is used on a 16-byte array instead of snprintf, enabling potential memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Servers using QLogic Fibre Channel adapters on Debian Linux may suffer kernel crashes, unexpected reboots, or memory corruption that disrupts storage operations and requires unplanned downtime for remediation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the vulnerable sprintf path in the driver by supplying input that causes the formatted host string to exceed the fixed buffer length, leading to writes beyond the array bounds.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel package to version 5.10.178-1 or newer on all Debian 11 systems; apply the update across the fleet and reboot affected hosts.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed kernel version matches or exceeds 5.10.178-1 using package manager queries and confirm the qla2xxx driver no longer contains the sprintf call on host_str.
Typical attack path
- Gain local access or ability to interact with qla2xxx-attached storage devices
- Trigger host_str formatting code path with oversized input
- Cause out-of-bounds memory write via sprintf
- Achieve kernel memory corruption or denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs and dmesg output for qla2xxx driver errors or warnings around host string formatting; correlate with any unexpected panics on systems using QLogic hardware.
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule kernel upgrades on all systems exposing QLogic adapters
- Test the fixed kernel in a staging environment before broad rollout
- Monitor kernel logs for qla2xxx-related oops or panics until patching completes
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: qla2xxx: Array index may go out of bound Klocwork reports array 'vha->host_str' of size 16 may use index value(s) 16..19. Use snprintf() instead of sprintf().
