What it actually does
Race condition in Linux kernel quota code allows concurrent dquot operations during dquot_suspend/dquot_resume and file open paths, resulting in dqgrab() being called on a dquot without the DQ_ACTIVE_B flag set and triggering a WARN_ON_ONCE.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel warning messages and potential instability during filesystem remount or quota reconfiguration on affected Linux systems; no widespread exploitation observed but requires patching to maintain stability in high-concurrency environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers concurrent sys_fsconfig calls that suspend and resume quotas while another process opens a file for write, causing the race between dquot_load_quota_sb and invalidate_dquots paths that hits the warning condition.
How to fix it
Upgrade Linux kernel packages to the fixed versions provided by the distribution (Debian 11: 5.10.158-1 or later; Debian 12/13: 6.0.3-1 or later) and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version matches or exceeds the listed fixed package versions; attempt to reproduce the original race scenario under fault injection and verify absence of the dqgrab warning.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell on affected Linux system
- Trigger concurrent fsconfig syscalls that perform ext4 remount with quota suspend/resume
- Simultaneously open files with O_RDWR to drive dquot_initialize and dqget paths
- Observe kernel warning in dquot_disable via invalidate_dquots
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for the specific WARN_ON_ONCE message referencing dqgrab and DQ_ACTIVE_B in quotaops.h or dquot_disable paths; no persistent artifacts expected after reboot.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems that perform frequent quota or ext4 remount operations
- Apply distribution kernel updates within normal change windows given low EPSS and absence from KEV
- Monitor for future upstream backports if running older kernels
