What it actually does
Race condition in Bluetooth ISO socket handling where sk_state and iso_conn validity checks/updates lack lock_sock protection, allowing concurrent iso_conn_del to free the conn structure and cause NULL pointer dereference during connect, sendmsg/recvmsg, or close paths.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using Bluetooth LE Audio or ISO channels face kernel crashes that interrupt services, require reboots, and create brief denial-of-service windows; the issue affects many kernel builds though exploitation remains uncommon.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker crafts concurrent Bluetooth ISO connection and close operations so that iso_conn_del races with iso_connect_cis/bis or socket I/O, freeing the conn object while another path still holds a reference and later dereferences it as NULL inside __iso_sock_close.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed release such as 6.1.42, 6.16.5-1, or the commit e969bfed84c1f88dc722a678ee08488e86f0ec1a; apply the vendor-supplied package for the distribution in use and reboot.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the referenced commit or matches a listed fixed version; exercise Bluetooth ISO sockets under load and verify absence of NULL dereference oops in dmesg.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local unprivileged access on an affected Linux host
- Use Bluetooth user-space tools to initiate ISO CIS/BIS connections
- Trigger rapid connect/disconnect sequences or concurrent socket operations to hit the locking race
- Cause kernel NULL dereference and system crash or reboot
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops traces containing __iso_sock_close, iso_conn_del, or bluetooth NULL pointer dereference; correlate with Bluetooth ISO socket activity around the crash timestamp.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any host exposing Bluetooth ISO functionality
- Restrict local Bluetooth socket access via AppArmor/SELinux or capability drops where ISO is unnecessary
- Monitor kernel logs for bluetooth-related NULL pointer oops until patches are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: ISO: fix iso_conn related locking and validity issues sk->sk_state indicates whether iso_pi(sk)->conn is valid. Operations that check/update sk_state and access conn should hold lock_sock, otherwise they can race. The order of taking locks is hci_dev_lock > lock_sock > iso_conn_lock, which is how it is in connect/disconnect_cfm -> iso_conn_del -> iso_chan_del. Fix locking in iso_connect_cis/bis and sendmsg/recvmsg to take lock_sock around updating sk_state and conn. iso_conn_del must not occur during iso_connect_cis/bis, as it frees the iso_conn. Hold hdev->lock longer to prevent that. This should not reintroduce the issue fixed in commit 241f51931c35 ("Bluetooth: ISO: Avoid circular locking dependency"), since the we acquire locks in order. We retain the fix in iso_sock_connect to release lock_sock before iso_connect_* acquires hdev->lock. Similarly for commit 6a5ad251b7cd ("Bluetooth: ISO: Fix possible circular locking dependency"). We retain the fix in iso_conn_ready to not acquire iso_conn_lock before lock_sock. iso_conn_add shall return iso_conn with valid hcon. Make it so also when reusing an old CIS connection waiting for disconnect timeout (see __iso_sock_close where conn->hcon is set to NULL).
