A kernel logging routine could print warning messages when users supplied very large names, but the system kept working normally and no real harm occurred.

What it actually does

The BPF verifier log uses a fixed 1024-byte buffer to output user-supplied BTF names and BTF.ext source lines; oversized input triggers a WARN_ONCE on truncation even though output handling remains correct.

Why it matters to the business

Low operational impact; systems continue to function but may generate spurious kernel warnings during normal BPF program loading by unprivileged users, with no data loss or service disruption.

How an attack unfolds

An unprivileged local user crafts a BPF program containing oversized BTF identifiers or source-line strings, loads it via the verifier, and triggers the fixed-size buffer warning; no further attacker actions or privilege escalation are possible.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream kernel commits 40c88c429a598006f91ad7a2b89856cd50b3a008 (stable) or c78d650be7377aae1a8704bc0ce5cc6f9f189014 (netxduo) that remove the unnecessary WARN_ONCE check.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the patch is present by checking for removal of the verifier log truncation warning logic in kernel/bpf/verifier.c; attempt to load a BPF program with an oversized BTF name and verify no WARN_ONCE is emitted.

Typical attack path

  1. Local unprivileged process prepares BPF program with large BTF data
  2. Program is submitted to the kernel verifier
  3. Fixed log buffer overflows and emits WARN_ONCE
  4. Warning appears in dmesg or logs; execution otherwise succeeds

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for the exact string "verifier log line truncated"; correlate with BPF program load events from unprivileged users; no persistent artifacts remain after the warning.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates containing the listed commits on all systems that compile or run BPF programs
  • Monitor dmesg for "verifier log line truncated" messages as a temporary indicator of exposure
  • No immediate action required for air-gapped or non-BPF environments given zero exploit maturity

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: drop unnecessary user-triggerable WARN_ONCE in verifierl log It's trivial for user to trigger "verifier log line truncated" warning, as verifier has a fixed-sized buffer of 1024 bytes (as of now), and there are at least two pieces of user-provided information that can be output through this buffer, and both can be arbitrarily sized by user: - BTF names; - BTF.ext source code lines strings. Verifier log buffer should be properly sized for typical verifier state output. But it's sort-of expected that this buffer won't be long enough in some circumstances. So let's drop the check. In any case code will work correctly, at worst truncating a part of a single line output.
