What it actually does
Use-after-free in __gtp_encap_destroy due to release_sock being called after sock_put drops the final socket reference count, allowing illegal access to a freed sk structure during spinlock operations.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using GTP networking face risk of kernel crashes, memory corruption, or potential code execution, leading to service disruption and requiring prioritized patching across fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers GTP device deletion or encapsulation disable operations that invoke gtp_dev_uninit and gtp_encap_disable, exploiting the incorrect lock/release ordering around sock_put to touch freed memory during queued spinlock acquisition.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to at least 4.14.322 or apply commit d38039697184aacff1cf576e14ef583112fdefef (and equivalent stable backports) to correct the lock_sock/release_sock ordering relative to sock_put.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit or is version 4.14.322 or newer; test GTP device creation/deletion paths under KASAN or similar memory debuggers to verify absence of slab-use-after-free reports.
Typical attack path
- Send netlink messages or perform rtnl operations to delete a GTP network device
- Cause the socket reference count to reach zero inside __gtp_encap_destroy
- Trigger release_sock on the already-freed socket leading to use-after-free in spinlock code
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports referencing __gtp_encap_destroy, gtp_encap_disable, or release_sock in the call stack; inspect audit logs for unexpected GTP device deletion via rtnetlink.
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update to all affected distributions as soon as possible
- Restrict unprivileged access to netlink and network device configuration where feasible
- Monitor kernel crash and KASAN logs for gtp-related use-after-free signatures
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: gtp: Fix use-after-free in __gtp_encap_destroy(). syzkaller reported use-after-free in __gtp_encap_destroy(). [0] It shows the same process freed sk and touched it illegally. Commit e198987e7dd7 ("gtp: fix suspicious RCU usage") added lock_sock() and release_sock() in __gtp_encap_destroy() to protect sk->sk_user_data, but release_sock() is called after sock_put() releases the last refcnt.
