What it actually does
Failure to return an error from ntfs_read_ea on inconsistent extended attributes allows subsequent use-after-free access in ntfs_set_ea during xattr operations.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the ntfs3 driver face risk of kernel crashes or memory corruption when processing malformed extended attributes on NTFS volumes, potentially disrupting file system operations and requiring urgent patching of affected kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts an NTFS image or extended attribute set containing inconsistent EAs, triggers ntfs_read_ea via setxattr or similar operations, and causes the kernel to proceed with invalid pointers that result in a use-after-free write in ntfs_set_ea.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit 1474098b590a426d90f27bb992f17c326e0b60c1 or later stable release containing the fix; rebuild and reboot systems using the ntfs3 driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version contains commit 1474098b590a426d90f27bb992f17c326e0b60c1; test with crafted NTFS images containing inconsistent EAs to verify error paths are now enforced.
Typical attack path
- Mount or access an NTFS volume containing malformed extended attributes
- Invoke setxattr or equivalent xattr syscall on a file within the volume
- ntfs_read_ea skips proper error return on inconsistency
- ntfs_set_ea performs write to freed memory
- Kernel triggers KASAN-detected use-after-free or potential escalation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN reports citing ntfs_set_ea or ntfs_read_ea; inspect audit trails for unusual setxattr calls on NTFS mounts; check for crashes around the time of xattr operations.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing NTFS volumes via ntfs3
- Monitor for KASAN or similar sanitizer reports involving ntfs_set_ea or ntfs_read_ea
- Restrict untrusted NTFS mounts until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fs/ntfs3: Return error for inconsistent extended attributes ntfs_read_ea is called when we want to read extended attributes. There are some sanity checks for the validity of the EAs. However, it fails to return a proper error code for the inconsistent attributes, which might lead to unpredicted memory accesses after return.
