What it actually does

Unsafe writes to cloned skbs with shared heads during frag list segmentation in UDP GSO offload when rx-gro-list packets traverse a bridge, causing NULL pointer dereference and skb corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Network stack instability leading to kernel crashes and service disruption in environments handling GRO traffic; low EPSS and no KEV status indicate limited active exploitation risk but still requires prompt patching for stability.

How an attack unfolds

Attacker sends traffic that triggers rx-gro-list GRO, which a bridge forwards both locally and to an egress device such as tun; segmentation then writes unsafely into shared-head clones, resulting in oops during napi processing.

How to fix it

Apply the kernel fix present in commit e8c5dca807cdfef1c9b3141c4c2bcd613d9700e7; upgrade mongodb/mongo (GIT) to the listed fixed revision.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the presence of commit e8c5dca807cdfef1c9b3141c4c2bcd613d9700e7 in the kernel tree; confirm GRO-list and bridge forwarding no longer trigger oops under load.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft or replay packets that GRO aggregates into frag lists
  2. Route traffic through a bridge device that performs local input and egress forwarding
  3. Trigger GSO segmentation in udp_offload path on the cloned skb
  4. Cause kernel NULL dereference and crash during napi poll or xmit

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for oops entries referencing __udp_gso_segment, inet_gso_segment, or skb corruption during napi/ixgbe_poll; inspect bridge forwarding paths for GRO-list usage.

What your security team should do

  • Patch all affected systems to the fixed commit within standard change windows
  • Monitor EPSS trend for any future increase in exploit likelihood
  • Test network paths that combine GRO, bridging, and tun devices before production rollout

The segmentation of such packets unsafely writes to the cloned skbs with shared heads. This change addresses the issue by uncloning as needed the to-be-segmented skbs.
