What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in anysee_master_xfer when user-controlled I2C msg has null buf and zero len, bypassing prior checks and crashing on buf[0] access.
Why it matters to the business
Potential kernel panic or denial of service on systems using affected DVB/media hardware drivers; low exploitation probability limits widespread operational disruption.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker crafts malicious I2C transfer messages with null buffers and zero lengths via the device interface, reaching the unchecked access in anysee_master_xfer after passing earlier validations.
How to fix it
Upgrade to fixed versions: eck-operator-3 and eck-operator-3-compat to 3.1.0-r2; Linux kernel to commit 73c0b224ceeba12dee2a7a8cbc147648da0b2e63 or equivalent stable patches that add len sanity checks before buf access.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel or package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases; inspect source for the added msg[i].len check in anysee_master_xfer; test with zero-len null buf messages to confirm no crash.
Typical attack path
- Obtain access to a system with anysee DVB-USB device or equivalent media hardware.
- Prepare I2C msg array with msg[i].buf set to NULL and msg[i].len set to 0.
- Invoke anysee_master_xfer through the driver interface with the crafted messages.
- Trigger null pointer dereference leading to kernel crash.
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or null pointer dereference traces referencing anysee_master_xfer; search dmesg or syslog for media driver faults involving I2C transfers.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching affected Linux kernel packages to the specified fixed commits or releases.
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates given the memory corruption family despite current low scores.
- Restrict untrusted access to DVB/media device interfaces until patched.
- Review similar drivers (e.g., az6027) for analogous null deref patterns.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: anysee: fix null-ptr-deref in anysee_master_xfer In anysee_master_xfer, msg is controlled by user. When msg[i].buf is null and msg[i].len is zero, former checks on msg[i].buf would be passed. Malicious data finally reach anysee_master_xfer. If accessing msg[i].buf[0] without sanity check, null ptr deref would happen. We add check on msg[i].len to prevent crash.
