What it actually does
A memory leak occurs because the control handler is not freed in certain probe-time error paths and in the device remove path of the max9286 media driver.
Why it matters to the business
Repeated driver probe failures or device insertions and removals over time can gradually exhaust kernel memory, leading to performance degradation or system instability that may require reboots or restarts.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers repeated error conditions during device probing or removal to accumulate leaked memory until the system becomes unstable; no remote or unauthenticated exploitation path is known.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that properly frees the control handler; update to a kernel version containing commit 3ca815294bf54fc024b2363efbece7aa08b8efd5 or equivalent.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the control handler is freed by reviewing the remove and error-exit paths in the max9286 driver source after applying the patch; monitor kernel memory usage during repeated probe/remove cycles.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a system running the affected driver
- Repeatedly trigger probe failures or device attach/detach events
- Accumulate memory leaks until resource exhaustion occurs
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for repeated max9286 probe or remove events accompanied by increasing memory usage; inspect slab or kmemleak reports for leaked control handler objects.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems that use the max9286 driver in media or automotive subsystems
- Monitor for upstream kernel updates containing the referenced fix commit
- Limit exposure by restricting local access on affected embedded or test systems until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: max9286: Free control handler The control handler is leaked in some probe-time error paths, as well as in the remove path. Fix it.
