What it actually does
Missing rtnl_lock() around dsa_tag_8021q_unregister() during ocelot-8021q tagging protocol teardown on driver unbind causes RTNL assertion failures in tag_8021q.c and vlan_core.c.
Why it matters to the business
Driver unload or system shutdown on affected Linux network hardware can trigger kernel warnings and potential instability, complicating maintenance and increasing operational risk for devices using non-default DSA tagging.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the unbind path (e.g., via PCI driver unbind sysfs) while the ocelot-8021q protocol is active; the missing lock allows concurrent RTNL operations, hitting assertions during vlan_vid_del and tag unregister.
How to fix it
Update to kernel versions containing the fix that acquires rtnl_lock before calling dsa_tag_8021q_unregister on driver remove; apply the referenced commit in net/dsa/ocelot.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the lock acquisition in felix_tag_8021q_teardown and absence of the RTNL assertion warnings during unbind testing with ocelot-8021q enabled.
Typical attack path
- Switch to ocelot-8021q tagging protocol on DSA switch
- Trigger driver unbind via sysfs or module removal
- Kernel executes felix_tag_8021q_teardown without rtnl_lock held
- Assertion fails in dsa_tag_8021q_unregister and vlan_vid_del
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for RTNL assertion failures mentioning tag_8021q.c:409 or vlan_core.c:376 during PCI driver unbind or DSA teardown; correlate with ocelot-8021q usage.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel on systems using felix/mscc_felix or ocelot DSA switches
- Test driver unbind and reboot paths in staging environments before production rollout
- Monitor for RTNL warnings in dmesg on affected hardware

The default felix_tag_npi_teardown() does not require rtnl_lock() to be held.
