What it actually does
Use-after-free in f2fs_truncate_data_blocks_range due to missing sanity check on direct node page during truncate_dnode, allowing out-of-bounds access via inode references after truncation.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or potential code execution on Linux systems using the f2fs filesystem, risking data loss, service disruption, and requiring urgent patching on affected storage setups.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers the flaw by performing file creation and truncation operations that cause inodeA to reference inodeB; truncation traverses stale node mappings leading to slab-use-after-free.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fixed commit af0f716ad3b039cab9d426da63a5ee6c88751185 or later stable versions containing the sanity check and ERROR_INVALID_NODE_REFERENCE handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel version includes the fix commit; mount f2fs and run fsck to confirm absence of ERROR_INVALID_NODE_REFERENCE; test truncation paths with syzkaller-style fuzzing.
Typical attack path
- Mount an f2fs filesystem
- Create files that establish cross-inode references via node pages
- Invoke truncate via setattr or creat system calls
- Trigger f2fs_truncate_inode_blocks and traverse invalid node mappings
- Cause KASAN-detected use-after-free in data block range processing
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports mentioning f2fs_truncate_data_blocks_range or truncate_dnode; check f2fs superblock for newly recorded ERROR_INVALID_NODE_REFERENCE errors after fsck runs.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all f2fs-using systems within standard patch windows
- Monitor for f2fs superblock error flags indicating invalid node references
- Restrict untrusted local access until patched

This patch fixes to add sanity check on dnode page in truncate_dnode(), so that, it can help to avoid triggering such issue, and once it encounters such issue, it will record newly introduced ERROR_INVALID_NODE_REFERENCE error into superblock, later fsck can detect such issue and try repairing. Also, it removes f2fs_truncate_data_blocks() for cleanup due to the function has only one caller, and uses f2fs_truncate_data_blocks_range() instead.
