What it actually does
The devlink_port_type_warn function emits a kernel warning without identifying the source device or driver that lacks a devlink port configuration.
Why it matters to the business
Administrators experience slower troubleshooting of network device setups on Linux systems, increasing operational overhead when diagnosing misconfigured interfaces across fleets of servers.
How an attack unfolds
No exploitation is possible; the change only augments a diagnostic warning message and does not alter control flow or expose memory.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 970c7035f4b03c7be9f49c403ccf6fb0b70039a1 or later; rebuild and deploy the updated kernel image on affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
After patching, trigger the warning condition and confirm the log line now prefixes the message with the device name (for example, "ice 0000:41:00.0: Type was not set for devlink port").
Typical attack path
- No attack path applies because the issue is limited to incomplete logging output.
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg output for the original unprefixed warning string "Type was not set for devlink port"; after remediation the string should appear with a device prefix.
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel update containing the referenced commit during the next maintenance window.
- Review kernel logs for repeated devlink_port_type_warn entries to identify drivers needing port configuration.
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates; no immediate action is required given the low exploitability.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: devlink: report devlink_port_type_warn source device devlink_port_type_warn is scheduled for port devlink and warning when the port type is not set.
