What it actually does
Missing read-only filesystem check in JFS txBegin allows a transaction to begin on a read-only mount, resulting in a NULL pointer dereference and memory corruption in the kernel.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using the JFS filesystem may experience kernel crashes or denial of service; widespread impact on Ubuntu LTS kernels increases operational risk and patch urgency for affected environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access mounts a JFS filesystem read-only then performs filesystem operations that invoke txBegin, triggering the unchecked path and causing a NULL dereference crash.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected kernel packages to the listed fixed versions: linux-aws-5.15 to 5.15.0-1014.18~20.04.1, linux-azure-5.15 to 5.15.0-1007.8~20.04.1, linux-azure-fde-5.15 to 5.15.0-1019.24~20.04.1.1, linux-gcp-5.15 to 5.15.0-1006.9~20.04.1, linux-gkeop-5.15 to 5.15.0-1003.5~20.04.2, linux-hwe-5.15 to 5.15.0-33.34~20.04.1, linux-ibm-5.15 to 5.15.0-1033.36~20.04.1, linux-intel-iotg-5.15 to 5.15.0-1003.5~20.04.1, linux-lowlatency-hwe-5.15 to 5.15.0-33.34~20.04.1, linux-oracle-5.15 to 5.15.0-1007.9~20.04.1, linux-riscv-5.15 to 5.15.0-1015.17~20.04.1, linux to 5.13.0-19.19, linux-aws to 5.13.0-1005.6, linux-aws-6.5 to 6.5.0-1008.8~22.04.1, linux-azure to 5.13.0-1006.7, linux-azure-6.5 to 6.5.0-1007.7~22.04.1, linux-azure-fde to 5.15.0-1019.24.1, linux-gcp to 5.13.0-1005.6, linux-gcp-6.5 to 6.5.0-1010.10~22.04.3, linux-gke to 5.15.0-1002.2, linux-gkeop to 5.15.0-1001.2, linux-hwe-6.5 to 6.5.0-14.14~22.04.1, linux-ibm to 5.15.0-1002.2, linux-intel-iotg to 5.15.0-1004.6, linux-kvm to 5.13.0-1004.4.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed kernel package versions match or exceed the fixed releases; confirm JFS module loads without triggering txBegin on read-only mounts via targeted filesystem tests.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access on a system with JFS support
- Mount a JFS volume in read-only mode
- Trigger filesystem activity that starts a transaction via txBegin
- Cause NULL pointer dereference leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for JFS-related NULL pointer dereference oops entries; examine mount and transaction activity on read-only JFS volumes for anomalous patterns.
What your security team should do
- Apply kernel updates to fixed versions immediately on all affected Ubuntu systems
- Audit systems for JFS usage and prioritize patching high-exposure hosts
- Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs related to JFS transactions post-deployment
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: FS: JFS: Check for read-only mounted filesystem in txBegin This patch adds a check for read-only mounted filesystem in txBegin before starting a transaction potentially saving from NULL pointer deref.
