What it actually does

Improper handling of PCI BAR4 resource mapping in lpfc_sli4_pci_mem_setup() when if_type is 0 or 6 leads to iounmap() being called with NULL pointers or skipped mappings, causing WARN() on some architectures and resource leaks.

Why it matters to the business

Servers using Emulex/Broadcom Fibre Channel adapters on affected Ubuntu kernels may experience unexpected warnings, potential instability during driver initialization, or memory leaks that degrade long-term reliability; the large number of listed package variants increases upgrade coordination effort across fleets.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with the ability to trigger lpfc driver load or PCI device enumeration on vulnerable hardware can cause the described NULL dereference paths during ioremap/iounmap sequences; no remote unauthenticated vector exists and no named threat actors have been observed exploiting it.

How to fix it

Upgrade to the fixed kernel versions provided for each affected package: linux 3.11.0-12.19 (14.04), 4.4.0-2.16 (16.04), 4.13.0-16.19 (18.04), 5.4.0-81.91 (20.04) and the corresponding linux-aws, linux-azure, linux-gcp, linux-hwe, linux-kvm, linux-oracle, linux-lts-xenial packages listed in the CVE details; apply the updates and reboot.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel version matches or exceeds the fixed package for the installed Ubuntu release; confirm lpfc driver initialization completes without the previously described iounmap NULL warnings in dmesg on affected hardware.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local or administrative access to a system with an lpfc-supported HBA
  2. Trigger PCI resource setup or driver probe that matches the if_type 0 or 6 conditions
  3. Observe resulting kernel WARN or resource accounting anomalies

How to detect it

Review kernel logs (dmesg/journalctl) around driver load times for iounmap-related WARN messages or NULL pointer references involving lpfc_sli4_pci_mem_setup on systems with lpfc hardware.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching any 14.04/16.04/18.04 systems still running the lpfc driver before their EOL dates
  • Inventory hosts with Emulex/Broadcom FC HBAs and schedule kernel upgrades during the next maintenance window
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any future increase in exploit maturity

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: scsi: lpfc: Fix ioremap issues in lpfc_sli4_pci_mem_setup() When if_type equals zero and pci_resource_start(pdev, PCI_64BIT_BAR4) returns false, drbl_regs_memmap_p is not remapped. This passes a NULL pointer to iounmap(), which can trigger a WARN() on certain arches. When if_type equals six and pci_resource_start(pdev, PCI_64BIT_BAR4) returns true, drbl_regs_memmap_p may has been remapped and ctrl_regs_memmap_p is not remapped. This is a resource leak and passes a NULL pointer to iounmap(). To fix these issues, we need to add null checks before iounmap(), and change some goto labels.
