What it actually does

The vulnerability stems from an incorrect assumption in Tree SRCU that CPU 0 is always online for work delegation under SRCU_SIZE_SMALL, causing work items to be queued on an offline CPU in non-standard boot scenarios such as kdump kernels booted with maxcpus=1, resulting in indefinite blocking during __flush_work calls.

Why it matters to the business

Specialized boot configurations on PowerPC and similar architectures can experience prolonged or permanent system hangs during shutdown or diagnostic operations, disrupting crash dump collection and reducing reliability in enterprise or embedded Linux deployments.

How an attack unfolds

A local user or process initiates operations that destroy fsnotify groups or marks, queuing SRCU work that the kernel attempts to flush on a CPU assumed to be online; when that CPU is offline the flush never completes and tasks block indefinitely in schedule_timeout.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix by updating to the Linux kernel commit 2c4d26dad76eadaa45a24543e311e9ce5d09f04e or equivalent stable backports that correctly identify the actual boot CPU for SRCU work delegation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of commit 2c4d26dad76eadaa45a24543e311e9ce5d09f04e in the kernel source tree; boot a kdump kernel with maxcpus=1 and exercise fsnotify operations to verify absence of hung tasks.

Typical attack path

  1. Configure or trigger a boot environment where the boot CPU is not CPU 0 (e.g., kdump with maxcpus=1)
  2. Perform user-space actions that cause inotify_release or fsnotify_destroy_group
  3. Trigger task_work_run which calls __flush_work on the incorrectly delegated SRCU work item
  4. Observe indefinite hang in __wait_for_common

How to detect it

Inspect kernel logs for hung-task warnings referencing fsnotify_wait_marks_destroyed, __flush_work, or schedule_timeout during early boot or systemd shutdown; correlate with kdump or maxcpus boot parameters.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the referenced kernel commit to all affected distributions as soon as packages are available
  • Validate kdump and maxcpus-restricted boot paths in test environments before production rollout
  • Review other kernel subsystems for similar hard-coded CPU 0 assumptions

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: srcu: Delegate work to the boot cpu if using SRCU_SIZE_SMALL Commit 994f706872e6 ("srcu: Make Tree SRCU able to operate without snp_node array") assumes that cpu 0 is always online. However, there really are situations when some other CPU is the boot CPU, for example, when booting a kdump kernel with the maxcpus=1 boot parameter. On PowerPC, the kdump kernel can hang as follows: ... [ 1.740036] systemd[1]: Hostname set to <xyz.com> [ 243.686240] INFO: task systemd:1 blocked for more than 122 seconds.
