What it actually does
Memory leak in nvme-core during controller initialization error paths due to missing dev_pm_qos_hide_latency_tolerance() call, leaving unreferenced kernel memory objects allocated via kmalloc.
Why it matters to the business
Gradual kernel memory exhaustion on systems with NVMe storage can lead to performance degradation, instability, or crashes during device initialization failures, increasing operational overhead in storage-heavy environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker triggers repeated NVMe controller initialization errors (such as authentication failures) to force the error unwind path without proper QoS cleanup, accumulating leaked kernel objects that may eventually exhaust memory resources.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel fix that adds the missing dev_pm_qos_hide_latency_tolerance() call in the error unwind path of nvme_init_ctrl; monitor for official distribution backports.
How to confirm the fix worked
Run kmemleak scans after exercising NVMe initialization error paths and confirm absence of unreferenced objects traced to nvme_init_ctrl or dev_pm_qos_update_user_latency_tolerance.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems with NVMe devices supporting bi-directional authentication
- Trigger error conditions in nvme_init_ctrl
- Force repeated allocation without cleanup in dev_pm_qos_update_user_latency_tolerance
- Accumulate unreferenced memory objects until resource pressure occurs
How to detect it
Review kmemleak reports for objects allocated in nvme_init_ctrl; inspect kernel logs for traces involving dev_pm_qos_update_user_latency_tolerance during NVMe device setup failures.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing the nvme-core memleak fix
- Enable kmemleak or similar kernel memory debugging in test and production NVMe environments
- Monitor memory utilization trends on systems using NVMe controllers
