What it actually does
The flaw causes __cpu_map_ring_cleanup to treat skb entries in ptr_ring as XDP frames during __cpu_map_entry_free, triggering incorrect XDP memory type warnings and potential mishandling when kthread stops prematurely under skb-mode XDP redirect stress.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel warnings or instability may occur on systems running XDP CPU maps with skb mode under load, affecting network performance and reliability in high-throughput or containerized environments; high ecosystem prevalence increases exposure risk despite low EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access enables xdp_redirect_cpu in skb and stress modes to trigger premature kthread stop in cpu_map_kthread_run, leaving skbs in ptr_ring that __cpu_map_ring_cleanup mishandles as XDP frames; similar kernel issues have been targeted by privilege escalation campaigns on Container-Optimized OS.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that properly handles skb cleanup in __cpu_map_ring_cleanup; upgrade affected Linux kernels to versions resolving this issue; monitor for related kernel updates given 387 days since publication.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version includes the bpf cpumap skb handling patch; reproduce xdp_redirect_cpu with skb-mode and stress-mode to verify absence of the XDP memory type warning; check dmesg for resolution of the __xdp_return warning.
Typical attack path
- Gain local user access on affected Linux kernel
- Load and attach XDP program using cpu_map in skb-mode with stress enabled
- Induce conditions that prematurely stop the cpu_map kthread
- Trigger __cpu_map_ring_cleanup on remaining ptr_ring entries
- Observe or leverage resulting memory type mismatch for denial of service or further escalation
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for 'Incorrect XDP memory type' warnings from __xdp_return during __cpu_map_entry_free; inspect workqueue and kthread activity around cpu_map_kthread_run; correlate with XDP program loads in skb mode.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using XDP CPU maps
- Disable skb-mode XDP redirect where feasible until patched
- Monitor EPSS trend and similar kernel CVEs for escalation risk
- Audit workloads for XDP usage and test under stress conditions post-upgrade
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf, cpumap: Handle skb as well when clean up ptr_ring The following warning was reported when running xdp_redirect_cpu with both skb-mode and stress-mode enabled: ------------[ cut here ]------------ Incorrect XDP memory type (-2128176192) usage WARNING: CPU: 7 PID: 1442 at net/core/xdp.c:405 Modules linked in: CPU: 7 PID: 1442 Comm: kworker/7:0 Tainted: G 6.5.0-rc2+ #1 Hardware name: QEMU Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996) Workqueue: events __cpu_map_entry_free RIP: 0010:__xdp_return+0x1e4/0x4a0 ...... One is due to the kthread cpu_map_kthread_run() is stopped prematurely. Another one is __cpu_map_ring_cleanup() doesn't handle skb mode and treats skbs in ptr_ring as XDP frames. Prematurely-stopped kthread will be fixed by the preceding patch and ptr_ring will be empty when __cpu_map_ring_cleanup() is called. But as the comments in __cpu_map_ring_cleanup() said, handling and freeing skbs in ptr_ring as well to "catch any broken behaviour gracefully".
