What it actually does
Missing null check before pointer dereference in the amphion VPU driver allows a null pointer to be dereferenced, resulting in a kernel crash (denial of service).
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Linux kernels with amphion hardware may experience unexpected crashes during media operations, leading to downtime and potential loss of availability on workstations or servers handling video.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local user privileges triggers the vulnerable code path in the amphion driver by supplying input that leaves the pointer null; the subsequent dereference causes a kernel panic. No remote or unauthenticated exploitation path exists.
How to fix it
Update to a Linux kernel containing commit bddd678fd2864b435d00d51a4d3808a0d89c79de or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Disable the amphion driver module if the hardware is not required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the presence of the null-pointer check in the amphion source after applying the update; confirm the running kernel version includes bddd678fd2864b435d00d51a4d3808a0d89c79de and test media workloads for stability.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell or user context on the target system
- Invoke media operations that exercise the amphion driver code path
- Supply crafted input resulting in a null pointer
- Trigger dereference leading to kernel oops/panic
How to detect it
Review kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log) for oops or panic messages referencing amphion driver functions; correlate with process activity that uses VPU/media APIs around the time of any crash.
- amphion
- REVERSE_INULL
- null pointer dereference in vpu
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing amphion hardware within the next patch cycle
- Audit kernel configurations to ensure only necessary media drivers are loaded
- Monitor for related kernel stability issues in amphion code paths
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: amphion: fix REVERSE_INULL issues reported by coverity null-checking of a pointor is suggested before dereferencing it
