What it actually does

Failure to cancel a timer in the exc3000 input driver on unbind or probe failure leaves a dangling timer that can dereference freed memory, resulting in use-after-free and kernel oops.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using the affected touchscreen driver may experience unexpected crashes or reboots, disrupting operations on Linux-based devices until the kernel is updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers repeated driver unbind or probe failure conditions on a system using the exc3000 driver, causing the still-pending timer callback to access already-freed structures and induce a kernel crash.

How to fix it

Update to a kernel containing commit 526a177ac6353d65057eadb5d6edafc168f64484 or later; for affected packages such as foreman_ansible upgrade to version 2.0.0 or newer.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains the referenced commit or a backported equivalent; inspect driver probe/unbind paths to confirm the timer is canceled; test unbind and probe-failure scenarios under memory pressure.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local access to a Linux system with the exc3000 driver loaded
  2. Trigger driver unbind or force probe failure conditions
  3. Allow the pending timer to fire after memory has been freed
  4. Observe resulting kernel oops or system instability

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for oops or panic messages referencing exc3000 and timer callbacks; search dmesg or syslog for use-after-free warnings around driver unload events.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the kernel patch or upgrade to a fixed release immediately on all systems exposing the exc3000 driver
  • Prioritize patching for any internet-facing or multi-user Linux hosts
  • Monitor vendor advisories for additional backports to distribution kernels

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Input: exc3000 - properly stop timer on shutdown We need to stop the timer on driver unbind or probe failures, otherwise we get UAF/Oops.
