What it actually does
Use-after-free in regcache_flat_read leads to slab-out-of-bounds read when snd_soc_component_write_field processes an invalid enum value without prior validation in the lpass audio driver.
Why it matters to the business
Local users on affected Linux kernels can trigger kernel memory corruption, leading to crashes, denial of service, or potential privilege escalation on systems using Qualcomm audio hardware.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts a malicious ALSA control write that calls tx_macro_put_dec_enum, which invokes regmap_update_bits without range checks, causing the regcache to access freed memory and read out-of-bounds data.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit 8f1512d78b5de928f4616a871e77b58fd546e651 or later stable releases that add proper error checking and valid-value validation before regcache accesses.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source, then re-run syzkaller or targeted ALSA control fuzzing to verify the out-of-bounds condition no longer occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell access on a vulnerable Linux system
- Load or interact with the lpass audio codec driver
- Issue a crafted snd_ctl_elem_write call targeting the dec_enum control
- Trigger regcache_flat_read on an invalid or stale register value
- Read or corrupt adjacent kernel memory via the out-of-bounds access
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for KASAN slab-out-of-bounds reports mentioning regcache_flat_read or tx_macro_put_dec_enum; correlate with unusual ALSA control writes from untrusted processes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing ALSA audio controls to unprivileged users
- Apply the fix commit or backport the validation checks if immediate reboot is not feasible
- Restrict unprivileged access to audio mixer controls via SELinux or AppArmor policies until patched
- Monitor for future syzkaller reports in the ASoC subsystem
