What it actually does
Reference count leak in kernel attribute handling: kset_find_obj returns a held reference on duplicate detection that is never released via kobject_put, allowing the object to remain pinned indefinitely.
Why it matters to the business
Local processes on affected Linux systems can gradually exhaust kernel memory, leading to denial of service or system instability; high downstream kernel adoption increases exposure across servers, desktops, and embedded devices.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers repeated duplicate attribute lookups in the dell-sysman sysfs interface; each lookup leaks a reference without release, accumulating pinned objects until memory pressure causes crashes or forces resource starvation.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing commit d079a3e1ccdd183b75db4f5289be347980b45284 or later; rebuild and deploy the fixed kernel image across all affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the presence of commit d079a3e1ccdd183b75db4f5289be347980b45284 in the running kernel source or binary; attempt to trigger duplicate attribute paths while monitoring kobject reference counts with kernel debug tooling.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user or container access on a system running the vulnerable kernel
- Interact with dell-sysman sysfs attributes to force kset_find_obj duplicate detection paths
- Repeat operations to accumulate unreleased references
- Monitor for memory pressure or trigger OOM conditions to achieve denial of service
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for repeated sysfs attribute operations involving dell-sysman; look for unusual growth in kobject or sysfs reference counts via debugfs or slabinfo; correlate with local process activity on affected hardware.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing dell-sysman interfaces
- Restrict local access and container workloads until patches are applied
- Monitor memory usage trends on Linux hosts for unexplained growth
- Review downstream distributions for backported fixes
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: platform/x86: dell-sysman: Fix reference leak If a duplicate attribute is found using kset_find_obj(), a reference to that attribute is returned. This means that we need to dispose it accordingly. Use kobject_put() to dispose the duplicate attribute in such a case. Compile-tested only.
