What it actually does
Use-after-free in nf_ct_helper_hash when nf_conntrack_init_start fails (e.g. during register_nf_conntrack_bpf) and subsequent netfilter conntrack helper modules call nf_conntrack_helpers_register on the freed pointer, enabling memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems may experience kernel instability, crashes, or local privilege escalation when loading conntrack-related modules after an initialization failure, increasing downtime and security exposure in container and server environments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers a failed nf_conntrack initialization, then loads a helper module such as netfilter_conntrack_ftp to dereference the dangling nf_ct_helper_hash pointer and achieve arbitrary memory corruption or code execution.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that guards nf_conntrack_helper_register against freed or uninitialized nf_ct_helper_hash; update to a kernel containing the resolution for CVE-2023-53619.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the guard check before nf_ct_helper_hash access in nf_conntrack_helper_register and verify successful module load after simulated init failure.
Typical attack path
- Trigger nf_conntrack_init_start failure on target system
- Load a conntrack helper module that invokes nf_conntrack_helpers_register
- Trigger use-after-free access to freed nf_ct_helper_hash
- Exploit resulting memory corruption for privilege escalation or denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or panic messages referencing nf_ct_helper_hash or nf_conntrack_helper_register after conntrack initialization errors; inspect dmesg and journalctl for module load sequences around netfilter helpers.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all Linux hosts using netfilter conntrack
- Monitor for module load failures involving nf_conntrack during boot or runtime
- Restrict unprivileged module loading where possible until patched
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: netfilter: conntrack: Avoid nf_ct_helper_hash uses after free If nf_conntrack_init_start() fails (for example due to a register_nf_conntrack_bpf() failure), the nf_conntrack_helper_fini() clean-up path frees the nf_ct_helper_hash map. When built with NF_CONNTRACK=y, further netfilter modules (e.g: netfilter_conntrack_ftp) can still be loaded and call nf_conntrack_helpers_register(), independently of whether nf_conntrack initialized correctly. This accesses the nf_ct_helper_hash dangling pointer and causes a uaf, possibly leading to random memory corruption. This patch guards nf_conntrack_helper_register() from accessing a freed or uninitialized nf_ct_helper_hash pointer and fixes possible uses-after-free when loading a conntrack module.
